The contrast between the image constructed in society and real life is becoming more apparent.
Mr. Armstrong, as a Dalit movement leader, has turned thousands of youths towards education, fostering a community of self-respect. It’s impressive how a single individual played such a crucial role in so many lives.
Many contemporary Dalit political leaders have risen to power in various parties and organizations without contributing as much to society as he did. However, it is surprising that Armstrong chose to remain a social activist in the political arena.
We live in a time where even parties and leaders without recognition or symbols earn huge sums in election politics. In this context, candidates are fielded on the basis of caste and religion to divide votes in each constituency, which is a costly affair. Even if not fielded, there’s a different cost involved. This is the current political trend.
Amidst this, Armstrong, a state leader of a national party with a permanent symbol, refrained from commercializing his influence, practicing positive politics instead. Despite having the opportunity to create a large platform for himself, he made significant social contributions in a smaller sphere.
It’s alarming that petty reasons, violence, and a murderous rage of a small group were enough to kill a life. Modern society and movies have normalized contract killings to the extent that even teenagers don’t hesitate to pick up knives.
Whoever picks up the knife, a family stands desolate in someone’s death. Beyond caste, religious, and political differences, constructive debates and actions regarding this issue should begin immediately.
